History
Web Africa is a multi-award winning, privately owned
internet service provider (ISP) that provides
broadband internet access and hosting solutions for
local and international clients. Founded in 1997,
Web Africa has continually pioneered the industry
with first to market ADSL innovations.
Their expertise in operating multiple hosting
clusters and automated solutions has resulted in a
year-on-year growth of over 70%, making them the 2nd
largest hosting provider in South Africa.
With over 30, 000 subscribers, 125 employees and
offices in Cape Town, Johannesburg and operations in
the USA, the companies’ top-quality support
infrastructure has been lauded by customers as one
of the best in the industry.
Partners
Smartcom recently invested in Web Africa, taking up
a 30% stake in the company. As an experienced
operator in the mobile telecoms space, the Smartcom
consortium brings additional management and industry
expertise to the table, allowing the company to
expand further on their offerings while also
launching its own network.
Web Africa is a member of the Internet Service
Providers Association of SA (ISPA) and has strategic
partnerships with Telkom, Internet Solutions and
Teraco
Culture
The company’s young and dynamic culture has created
an ideal environment for creativity and innovation.
They actively attract top technical talent through
their unorthodox, Google-style work ethic, which
enhances customer service and encourages a low staff
turnover.
Research and Development
They invest significant resources in research and
development, and their ethos of innovation has led
to the development of many of their own technologies
such as the prepaid ADSL and DSLSecure (an effective
measure against bandwidth theft and hacking), a
first to the SA market.
Web Africa provides solutions for corporate, small
and medium enterprises, home users and resellers.
Their products include shared hosting, dedicated
servers, dial-up and ADSL Internet connectivity.
They also have one of the strongest reseller
programs in SA.
Social Responsibility
Though not dictated to by quotas, Web Africa
endeavours to make black economic empowerment (BEE)
a priority, and currently has an approx 60%
non-white staff complement. Many of their customers
are black-owned businesses, and, by providing IT
services and the necessary infrastructure and
training to expand, they are actively supporting the
growth of many self-owned BEE companies.
